  3. A bid in this situation is known as balancing.  You
  4. are in part bidding your partner's hand too.

  6. Suit 2Bid:  A jump overcall promises a 6 card suit
  7.              and 10 or more points in high cards.
  8. Suit 2Bid:  Non jump competitive overcall, 6 cards,
  9.              HCPC 5 or more.
  10. Suit 1Bid:  Usually a 5 card suit and less than 10
  11.               points.
  12. Double:  Support in all unbid suits, HCPC 11 or
  13.       more (may have a five card suit and 
  14.       little support for one of the other
  15.           unbid suits).
  16. 1NT:     Balanced hand, HCPC 9 or more, 2 QT,
  17.           and stopper in opponent's suit.
